Alberta provincial politics and legislative priorities
Overview
Following a provincial referendum in which voters chose to remain in Canada, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has moved to address the issue of separatism within her government. Smith stated that the debate regarding secession is settled and expects the United Conservative Party (UCP) to move past the topic. To formalize this stance, Smith announced that UCP officials, board members, and candidates for the 2027 provincial election must sign a declaration vowing not to advocate for provincial separation.
As the government shifts its focus toward other legislative priorities, new bills have been tabled addressing social and consumer issues. Justice Minister Mickey Amery has introduced legislation to reform public sector hiring by prohibiting public bodies—including Crown corporations, municipalities, and post-secondary institutions—from using diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies for hiring and promotion. Premier Smith stated the changes aim to ensure hiring is based on merit and qualifications. The bill also targets the Alberta Human Rights Act to restrict programs designed to uplift specific disadvantaged groups and requires that mandatory training be ideologically neutral.
Additionally, Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally has introduced legislation to increase consumer protections. This includes a ‘lemon law’ for defective vehicles, allowing owners to seek refunds or replacements within three years or 60,000 kilometres if repairs fail repeatedly, a ‘right-to-repair’ framework for electronics, and potential price caps or limits on markups for ticket resellers. Other proposed measures include legislation to lower auto insurance costs, new protections for utility bills, and stricter regulations regarding artificial intelligence data centres.
