Algeria wildfire relief and emergency response

Algeria has initiated several relief efforts following devastating forest fires in regions including Jijel, Skikda, and Béjaïa.

The Ministry of Health deployed mobile medical clinics to provide physical healthcare and psychological support to residents in areas where traditional facilities are inaccessible. To assist with financial recovery, Algérie Poste announced a ten-day period for victims to replace lost or destroyed payment cards free of charge. Additionally, national solidarity movements involving citizens and businesses have organized caravans to deliver food, water, clothing, and hygiene products. Efforts have also been extended to provide medical guidance for treating burns and injuries in domestic animals and livestock affected by the fires.

As the crisis has escalated, the fires have resulted in at least 12 deaths and widespread destruction of homes, livestock, and crops across eastern and central provinces, including Tizi Ouzou. In response, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has ordered a modification of the penal code to reinstate the death penalty for those involved in intentional arson.

Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb announced that the state will provide full compensation to victims, covering all damages—‘down to the smallest item’—with a completion deadline of September 15. The Ministry of Housing is currently mobilizing technical experts to assess damaged structures and coordinate financial aid. Furthermore, relief efforts have expanded to include the restoration of vital water, electricity, and gas utility networks. On the international stage, French President Emmanuel Macron has offered assistance to Algeria, a gesture noted as a potential sign of diplomatic rapprochement.
