All Blacks injury issues during South Africa tour

Overview

The All Blacks' rugby tour of South Africa continues to be hampered by injuries. Following the earlier departures of George Bell and winger Caleb Clarke, centre Billy Proctor was ruled out for the remainder of the tour after suffering a fractured shoulder blade during a victory over the Stormers. Proctor is expected to require a 10 to 12-week recovery period.

As the teams prepare for the opening Test of the four-match series at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, squad depth remains a primary concern. The All Blacks have dealt with the loss of prop Ollie Norris and face uncertainty regarding the availability of Damian McKenzie and Cortez Ratima. In a late squad change ahead of the opener, flanker Anton Segner was withdrawn from the matchday 23 due to “acute inflammatory arthritis in his ankle,” with Chiefs loose forward Simon Parker named as his replacement.

On the South African side, head coach Rassie Erasmus has noted that captain Siya Kolisi is managing a side injury and loosehead prop Ox Nche is dealing with a knee issue. For the first Test, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu has been named at flyhalf, supported by Manie Libbok on the bench, while Handré Pollard remains out of the starting lineup. Erasmus has also requested that the Johannesburg crowd remain quiet during the All Blacks’ Haka to respect the tradition. The series is scheduled to conclude in Baltimore, United States.
