Alleged Russian funding of Alaska energy project
Overview
Investigations have linked the sanctioned Russian energy giant Novatek to a $25 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project in Alaska’s North Slope, known as Polar LNG. Reports indicate that Novatek allegedly used a middleman in the United Arab Emirates, specifically the Abu Dhabi-based firm Tech Wave, to bypass sanctions and funnel investment into Trump-linked proxies.
The project, intended to develop infrastructure for Asian markets, has faced significant internal instability. Following revelations of the arrangement, Polar LNG’s CEO Joel Riddle and much of the senior management team resigned. Riddle stated that allowing Russian technology to control Arctic gas commercialization is “not only unlawful, but it's not in the U.S. interest.”
Further allegations suggest that Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff held meetings in Moscow with Vladimir Putin regarding these connections. Additionally, reports have surfaced claiming that Russian intelligence hackers may have compromised Kushner’s mobile device, potentially exposing details regarding his financial ties and bank accounts in the United Arab Emirates.
