Makarska incident: Serbian citizen detained over jersey dispute and social media posts
A 49-year-old Serbian citizen from Novi Sad has been detained in Split's Bilice prison for 14 days following an incident in Makarska. The situation began when a 43-year-old local man confronted the Serbian national for wearing a Red Star Belgrade football club jersey and subsequently pushed him into the sea. While the attacker was released after being charged with disturbing public order, the Serbian national faced further legal action.
Following a police investigation of his social media profiles, authorities charged the Serbian man with two offenses for allegedly glorifying war criminal Ratko Mladić and insulting the Republic of Croatia and its citizens. Miodrag Linta, president of the Alliance of Serbs from the Region, has called on the EU Representation in Zagreb to demand an explanation from Croatian authorities, criticizing the perceived double standard in how the physical attacker and the victim were treated.
Reports indicate the Serbian man's Facebook posts included claims denying the Srebrenica genocide. The Municipal Misdemeanor Court in Split ordered the 14-day detention following a police proposal for a 15-day prison sentence.
