Croatia-Serbia tensions over Makarska incident
Overview
An incident in Makarska, Croatia, involving a Serbian citizen has led to diplomatic tension between Serbian representatives and the Croatian judiciary. The situation began when a 43-year-old Croatian man confronted a 49-year-old Serbian national for wearing a Red Star Belgrade football jersey and pushed him into the sea. While the attacker was released after being charged with disturbing public order, the Serbian man was ordered into 14 days of detention in a Split prison.
The detention followed a police investigation into the Serbian man’s social media activity. Authorities charged him with two offenses for allegedly insulting the Republic of Croatia and its citizens, as well as glorifying war criminal Ratko Mladić and denying the Srebrenica genocide.
Miodrag Linta, president of the Alliance of Serbs from the Region, has criticized the Croatian judiciary for a perceived double standard, arguing that the legal actions against the victim have overshadowed the physical assault. Linta has called on the European Union Delegation in Zagreb to demand an explanation from Croatian authorities regarding the treatment of the Serbian citizen.
