During the dry season, extensive Amazon forest fires release fine particles and toxic gases that aggravate respiratory conditions in children. Pediatric specialists warn of increased asthma, bronchiolitis, allergic rhinitis and sinusitis, advising continued medication, limited outdoor exposure on high‑pollution days, and up‑to‑date vaccinations to curb severe infections and hospitalisations.

Together, these findings highlight both a policy‑driven reduction in respiratory illness in certain Amazon locales and the heightened vulnerability of children to smoke‑related health risks when fires spread across the region.
