Amazon environmental crime enforcement operations

Overview

In late July 2026, police forces from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru conducted ‘Operation Green Shield 2026’. Coordinated by the International Initiative of Law Enforcement for Climate (I2LEC), the joint effort deployed over 3,600 officers across the Amazon Basin to target illegal mining, logging, wildlife trafficking, and fuel smuggling. The operation resulted in 839 arrests and the seizure of significant quantities of illegally harvested timber, minerals, and mining equipment, alongside the rescue and recovery of thousands of animals.

Following this large-scale regional crackdown, enforcement efforts continued within Brazil. The Environmental Military Police launched ‘Operação Madeira Legal’ in the Northwest region of Sao Paulo. This specific operation focuses on inspecting vehicles and documentation at key highways and freight corridors to combat irregularities in the transport and trade of native timber originating from the Amazonia Legal region. Authorities are utilizing the Forest Origin Document (DOF) to verify the species, volume, and legal origin of forest products.
