Ambush on Bangsamoro Interim Chief Minister

Overview

On August 15, an armed ambush targeted the convoy of Bangsamoro Interim Chief Minister Abdulraof A. Macacua in Maguindanao del Norte. While Macacua and his companions were reported unharmed, government officials, including the Maguindanao del Sur Governor and the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU), condemned the violence. Officials emphasized that such acts threaten the peace process and urged the public to remain calm.

Following the attack, the Philippine National Police (PNP) established a special investigation task group. Investigators recovered 81 spent cartridges from the scene, including 5.56 and 7.62 caliber rounds. Authorities are treating the ambush as a suspected election-related incident ahead of the BARMM parliamentary elections scheduled for September 14. In response, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has increased security deployments and checkpoint operations to ensure the upcoming polls remain peaceful.
