American Airlines passenger restraint incident

An incident aboard American Airlines Flight 618 on September 3 led to the arrest of 67-year-old Arthur Layne Lundeen. During a flight from Dallas/Fort Worth to Newark, Lundeen reportedly engaged in a tirade involving racist and anti-gay slurs and targeted a flight attendant. The situation escalated when Lundeen allegedly struck a passenger’s computer and pushed a female passenger who tried to intervene.

New details indicate the violence began following a conversation with Rabbi Jonathan Cahn regarding religion. Witnesses claim Lundeen assaulted the Rabbi by grabbing him by the throat and breaking his laptop. Additionally, Lundeen reportedly bit a crew member.

To manage the violence, several male passengers and crew members used zip ties and duct tape to secure Lundeen to his first-class seat. This forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Lundeen was subsequently arrested by the Maryland Transportation Police and charged with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct.

Lundeen, identified as an Arizona realtor, has since been terminated from his employment following the release of viral footage of the incident. The event has highlighted the use of restraint kits by airlines; while captains can authorize physical restraint, the use of adhesive tape has drawn scrutiny due to potential safety concerns during rapid evacuations.
