ams OSRAM optical technology developments

Overview

ams OSRAM has expanded its focus from consumer-facing optical technologies to industrial AI infrastructure standards.

In September 2026, the company showcased collaborative imaging and display solutions for smartphones at the China International Optoelectronic Exposition. Developed with vivo, this technology integrates OLED under-display spectral color sensors, multi-channel spectral sensors, and direct Time-of-Flight (dToF) sensors to improve light perception and spatial understanding in mobile devices.

By October 2026, the company’s efforts shifted toward data center connectivity. ams OSRAM joined the ‘Short-Reach Micro-Emitter Optics (SRMO)’ initiative within the Open Compute Project (OCP). This alliance aims to establish standards for highly parallel optical connectivity to support massive GPU clusters and AI fabrics. To support this, the company introduced an 850-nm thin-film VCSEL platform designed to provide greater reach than traditional copper connections while maintaining energy efficiency.
