Analog photography preservation in Mexico City

Analog photography and historical photographic processes maintain a presence in Mexico City through specialized workshops and cultural institutions.

In the Donceles corridor of the Centro Histórico, a community of technicians and lab specialists provides essential services including mechanical camera repair, lens maintenance, and darkroom processing. These workshops serve students and photojournalists, catering to a steady demand for vintage equipment and film. Local owners have requested that city authorities recognize these optical repair labs as “living cultural heritage of the capital.”

Complementing these commercial services, the Museo Archivo de la Fotografía, under the Mexico City Secretariat of Culture, facilitates educational engagement with historical techniques. On August 15, the museum hosted a workshop titled ‘Cianotipia Desde el Archivo’ (Cyanotype from the Archive). Led by visual artist Jorge Díaz, the session allowed participants to experiment with the cyanotype process—a contact printing method known for its distinct blue tones—using images from the museum’s collection alongside personal photographs and objects to create collages on paper and fabric.
