Ancient olive tree harvest in Antalya
Overview
Two ancient olive trees, estimated to be between 761 and 1,211 years old, have begun producing fruit at Zeytinpark in Antalya, Turkey. The trees were originally located in the Akhisar district of Manisa and were uprooted in 2016 to protect them from highway construction.
Following an initiative led by Ali Çandır, President of the Antalya Commodity Exchange, the trees were relocated and underwent a period of adaptation to the local soil and climate. The ‘Uslu’ variety trees are now being harvested for both table olives and olive oil.
Recent reports indicate the harvest from these specific trees is expected to yield approximately 160 kilograms of produce. Beyond their agricultural value, the trees have become a significant attraction, with visitors seeking the fruit for its perceived symbolic value as a sign of luck and abundance.
