Andalusia forest fire management and political dispute

Overview

During the summer of 2026, Andalusia experienced significant forest fires. Initial reports from the coordinating prosecutor for the Environment, Javier Rufino, indicated that approximately 60% of the summer blazes had unknown causes. Among those with identified origins, negligence and imprudence accounted for about 10%, while deliberate arson represented a slightly lower percentage.

Following the Niebla forest fire, which destroyed 33,000 hectares across 11 municipalities, the situation evolved into a political dispute. The PSOE has called for a parliamentary commission of inquiry to investigate emergency management and the performance of the Infoca firefighting service. However, the PP and Vox parties have rejected requests for an extraordinary plenary session dedicated to the fire. The regional government has instead scheduled a general appearance for mid-September to address the fires alongside other regional issues.
