Andalusia school cafeteria food safety investigation
Overview
An investigation was launched by the Junta de Andalucía after larvae were discovered in rice served at the CEIP El Tínar school cafeteria in Albolote. The catering company, Mediterránea Group, issued an apology and stated they were conducting an internal investigation, maintaining that their food safety records and organic products were in order.
Following the incident, the Education Counselor for the Junta de Andalucía, Carmen Castillo, defended the safety and quality of regional school cafeteria services. She highlighted existing audit measures, such as the Evacole plan and visits by the Public Education Agency (APAE), which are intended to “guarantee periodic supervision to detect and correct any incident that may occur.” Castillo noted that menus are designed to follow the Mediterranean diet.
