Android Auto connectivity and stability issues

Users of Android Auto have sought ways to optimize connectivity and troubleshoot common technical difficulties, such as connection drops or failures to establish links. Recommended solutions included restarting devices, using high-quality USB cables, and updating software.

Following reports of the service randomly disconnecting and freezing—which interrupted navigation, audio, and interface controls—Google released updates to address these stability problems. The issues were notably prevalent after the release of version 17.2, particularly affecting certain non-certified aftermarket multimedia units. Google indicated that version 17.4 and newer should resolve these issues, with version 17.5 currently in beta and rolling out to stable users.

Google has since released Android Auto version 17.4 to address widespread reports of the application freezing or disconnecting unexpectedly. This issue, which surfaced around version 17.1, affected various Android devices, including Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models, across both wired and wireless connections.

While the app update resolves many stability issues, a separate problem has been identified affecting Pixel 10 users in certain vehicles. This specific conflict involves the head unit firmware in Volkswagen Group vehicles, including brands such as Skoda, SEAT, and Volkswagen. For these users, a simple app update via the Google Play Store is insufficient; instead, they must visit an authorized dealer to receive a firmware update for the vehicle’s multimedia system. Additionally, Google is rolling out a speedometer feature within Google Maps for Android Auto, providing drivers with a real-time speed indicator on the interface.
