Android credential transfer feature launch

Overview

Google has introduced a new feature for Android designed to facilitate the secure transfer of passwords and passkeys between compatible password management applications. This system, referred to as Android Credential Transfer, aims to eliminate the security risks associated with exporting credentials into unencrypted CSV or JSON files.

The process is coordinated by the Android operating system via the Credential Transfer API within Google Play Services. When a user initiates an import in a new password manager, Android detects other installed managers on the device, allowing the user to authorize a direct, encrypted transfer of data.

The feature utilizes the FIDO Alliance’s Credential Exchange Format (CXF), which supports various credential types including one-time passcodes, payment cards, and SSH keys. The service is compatible with devices running Android 8 or later. Initial participating services include Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane.
