Journalist and activist Andrzej Poczobut, who spent over five years in Belarusian prisons under the administration of Alexander Lukashenko, has been recognized for his advocacy of human rights and Polish identity. Following his release on April 28, 2026, as part of international negotiations, Poczobut was named an Honorary Citizen of Opole. In September 2026, Poczobut returned to Belarus via the Bobrowniki border crossing despite safety warnings. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski expressed concern, stating that Poczobut is ‘playing with fire’ and could face arrest at any moment. Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya added that his return does not indicate an improvement in the political climate, warning that returning to Belarus remains dangerous for those facing persecution. Following a brief visit, Poczobut has since returned to Poland. During his time in Belarus, he traveled visit to Grodno, Minsk, Volkovysk, and Kobryn to meet with family and representatives of the Polish minority. Angelika Borys, head of the Union of Poles in Belarus, reported that the visit proceeded peacefully and that Kobryn, Poczobut was welcomed warmly as a hero by the local community. He also visited memorial sites, including Polish soldiers' graves in Sopockiny. Although Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Foreign Minister Sikorski appealed for him returned to remain in Poland for his safety, Poczobut proceeded with the trip to support the Polish community in Belarus.
