Andrzej Poczobut advocacy and Belarus return plans

Overview

Journalist and activist Andrzej Poczobut, who spent over five years in Belarusian prisons under the administration of Alexander Lukashenko, has been recognized for his advocacy of human rights and Polish identity.

Following his release on April 28, 2026, as part of international negotiations involving the United States, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan, Poczobut was named an Honorary Citizen of Opole by a unanimous vote of the City Council. The initiative to honor him was led by Opole Mayor Arkadiusz Wiśniewski and Minister Tomasz Siemoniak.

In September 2026, Poczobut returned to Belarus via the Bobrowniki border crossing. He intends to stay for approximately one week to visit family in Grodno and support the Association of Poles in Belarus before traveling to the United States and Canada to meet with the Polish diaspora.

His return has drawn warnings from political figures. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski expressed concern, stating that Poczobut is ‘playing with fire’ and noting that the journalist could face arrest at any moment. Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya added that while his return is significant, it does not indicate an improvement in the political climate, warning that returning to Belarus remains dangerous for those facing persecution.
