Animal hoarding investigation in Lawrence County
Overview
Authorities in Lawrence County, Missouri, conducted a rescue operation at a property following investigations into animal neglect and theft. The operation, involving the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, the Missouri Department of Agriculture, and the Humane Society of Missouri’s Animal Cruelty Task Force, resulted in the rescue of approximately 170 animals, including dogs, cats, horses, goats, and chickens.
Investigators reported that animals were living in poor conditions among trash and overgrown vegetation, with some kept in cages too small for adequate movement or inside a dilapidated school bus. The investigation was aided by pet detective Melanie Self, who helped a resident identify a missing Catahoula Leopard Dog after hearing its ‘unique bark’ in a Facebook video. Approximately 20 local residents had reportedly contacted Self regarding missing or stolen pets.
Property owner Susan Berry, 70, has been charged with misdemeanor animal neglect and felony stealing. The Missouri Department of Agriculture is also investigating whether the site was operating as an unlicensed animal breeding facility. This incident marks the third time authorities have intervened at this specific location, with previous seizures occurring in 2000 and 2021.
