Antalya municipal corruption investigation
Overview
An investigation into the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality and its subsidiary, ALDAŞ, has resulted in an indictment accepted by the Antalya 3rd High Criminal Court. The 127-page document names 21 suspects, including former Mayor Muhittin Böcek, who was removed from office following his arrest.
Charges include embezzlement, fraud against public institutions, and the unfair acquisition of property. Investigators allege a public loss of approximately 29.5 million lira due to irregularities in tenders, luxury travel, and the personal use of company assets between 2020 and 2025. The indictment also cites attempts to influence Sayıştay (Court of Accounts) auditors, with telephone records suggesting personnel discussed ways to ensure a favorable audit process.
From prison, Böcek has leveled bribery allegations against Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, claiming İmamoğlu requested approximately 15 million euros in exchange for supporting his 2024 candidacy. Böcek testified to delivering an initial 5 million euros via the ‘hawala’ informal money transfer system and alleged other transfers were made to political figures Veli Ağbaba and Ferdi Zeyrek under instructions from CHP leader Özgür Özel.
