Anthropic AI Compute & Financing Expansion

Overview

In early August 2026 Anthropic signed a six‑year, $10 billion agreement with Volta Infrastructure Holdings for roughly 133 MW of Nvidia Vera Rubin GPUs at a former Bitcoin‑mining site in Tydal, Norway. The deal includes a long‑term lease that could rise to about $8 billion. At the same time the company launched an internal custom‑silicon group, recruiting senior engineers to co‑design chips that will accelerate Claude models while complementing its existing multi‑chip strategy with processors from AWS, Google, Nvidia, AMD and potential Samsung manufacturing partners.

Analysts later detailed a $200 billion financing network centred on Google, which supplies more than $150 billion of TPUs, backs private‑credit vehicles that purchased a million TPUs for $35 billion, and guarantees power for ten crypto‑miner‑backed data‑centre projects totalling 2.4 GW. Google also assumes up to $44 billion of liability if those leases default.

On 5 August, banks led by Morgan Stanley and Blackstone began off‑loading about $15 billion of debt tied to an Anthropic data‑centre project backed by Google. Through special‑purpose vehicles Anthropic has accumulated $71 billion of chip‑lease financing, keeping the hardware off its balance sheet and relying on Broadcom’s investment‑grade credit for senior tranches, including a $35 billion TPU tranche from June 2026. The financing underpins Anthropic’s planned October 2026 IPO, which targets a post‑money valuation near $965 billion.
