Anthropic AI data center expansion

Anthropic has initiated efforts to expand its AI infrastructure through strategic partnerships and large-scale leasing agreements.

Initially, the company announced the formation of Theseus Infrastructure, a platform created in partnership with Macquarie Asset Management and the Singaporean sovereign wealth fund GIC. This platform is intended to develop and operate data centers specifically designed to support Anthropic’s Claude AI service, with an initial focus on the United States. Under this model, Anthropic secures capacity through long-term leases rather than direct asset ownership.

Following this, Anthropic expanded its footprint to Australia by signing a lease agreement with Zerra DC for the Western Downs Digital Park in Queensland. Valued at approximately $31.9 billion, the facility near Dalby is planned to be one of Australia’s largest AI-focused developments, with a projected capacity of 2.16 gigawatts. The project is expected to come online in 2027, pending local and federal approvals.

The scale of the project has sparked significant debate regarding environmental and infrastructure impacts. While the Climate Council previously warned that the facility’s potential daily consumption of 47GWh of power could increase wholesale electricity prices in Queensland by 13%, Greenpeace Australia Pacific has also warned that massive energy and water requirements could increase climate pollution and strain local grids.

In response to the rapid expansion of the industry, the Australian government has announced a consultation process to develop national AI infrastructure standards. These standards aim to establish mandatory minimum requirements for large data centers regarding energy use, water sustainability, and community impact. Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt indicated that new developments will likely be expected to provide their own renewable energy sources to mitigate local grid impacts.
