Anti-corruption initiatives in North Macedonia

North Macedonia has initiated several measures aimed at combating corruption and improving institutional transparency. Prime Minister Christian Mickoski introduced a free hotline and online portal to allow citizens to report bribery requests, noting that a government poll indicated 80% of respondents believe corruption exists within state institutions. While the government framed these actions as part of reforms to be reported to the European Union, opposition figures criticized the initiative and raised concerns regarding judicial independence and media concentration.

Following these efforts, the Ministry of Finance and the State Audit Office signed a memorandum of cooperation to strengthen the public finance system and prevent fraud involving domestic and European Union funds.

In August 2026, the Commission for the Political System and Inter-Community Relations approved and forwarded several reports from the State Commission for Prevention of Corruption (KSHPK) to the Assembly. These include the 2025 annual work report and documents regarding the implementation of the National Strategy for the Prevention of Corruption and Conflict of Interest 2021–2025. The approved documents also contain special reports on election campaign financing for municipal mayors and councilors in Gostivar, Vrapčište, Mavrovo and Rostuše, and Centar Župa.

Commission President Adem Çuçul noted that the 2025 annual report reflects a year in which the KSHPK received 612 submissions and approved 583 decisions. The body issued 111 payment orders for anti-corruption law violations, initiated 45 violation procedures, and submitted eight initiatives to the Public Prosecutor's Office to begin criminal proceedings.
