Anti-Ukrainian assaults in Poland

Entities: Polish Police · Ukrainian woman (victim) · Prokuratura Rejonowa w Gdyni · Ukrainian woman (40‑year‑old) · Gdynia

Overview

In late July 2026, two attacks on Ukrainian residents in Poland were reported, underscoring ongoing concerns about hostility toward the community.

On 30 July, a 48‑year‑old Polish woman in Częstochowa struck a 35‑year‑old Ukrainian ride‑share driver in the head after he refused to stop at a shop while transporting a child. The driver filed a complaint; the woman turned herself in, was detained, placed under police supervision, barred from approaching the victim, and charged with discrimination based on nationality, an offence punishable by up to five years in prison. A financial guarantee was required and the case was referred to a family court concerning the child.

On the same day in Gdynia, a 76‑year‑old Polish man attacked a 40‑year‑old Ukrainian woman on the steps of Żelazna Street with a wooden cane, causing non‑life‑threatening head injuries. Police identified the suspect through forensic and surveillance evidence and detained him on 1 August. Investigators have found no evidence that the assault was motivated by anti‑Ukrainian prejudice, and a bodily‑injury case was opened.

Authorities, including Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński, reiterated a zero‑tolerance stance toward hate‑motivated violence, praising the swift police response and emphasizing “zero tolerance for aggression and hatred.”

A separate assault on 1 August in Wrocław, in which an 18‑year‑old Ukrainian man stabbed a Polish woman, was also reported, but officials have not linked it to anti‑Ukrainian sentiment.
