Antioquia regional governance and infrastructure

Overview

In Antioquia, Governor Andrés Julián Rendón has addressed several regional challenges, including forest fires and infrastructure needs. Following a visit to Abejorral, the Governor announced a 500 million peso reward fund to identify those responsible for recent forest fires, stating that 27 incidents in the area were “intentional rather than accidental.”

To assist with reconstruction following an August 10 earthquake, Rendón and Medellín Mayor Federico Gutiérrez proposed expanding the ‘Obras por Impuestos’ (Works for Taxes) mechanism. They suggested increasing the percentage of resources companies can direct toward public works from 1% to 10%, which could raise annual funding from 1.5 trillion to between 14 and 15 trillion pesos.

Additionally, the departmental government has focused on local infrastructure improvements. In Guarne, projects were completed to renovate school restaurants, such as the one at the Inmaculada Concepción Educational Institution, and to improve multi-sport courts and rural roads through collaborative agreements with local community boards.
