Real Madrid planning Antonio Rüdiger replacement

Overview

Antonio Rüdiger is expected to depart Real Madrid as a free agent at the conclusion of the 2026-27 campaign. Although the 33-year-old German defender recently signed a one-year contract extension, the club reportedly has no intention of offering further extensions, aligning with its policy regarding veteran players.

While Rüdiger remains a valued leader in the dressing room, he is no longer an undisputed starter. He has seen a decline in playing time under manager Jose Mourinho, falling behind Ibrahima Konaté and Dean Huijsen in the defensive hierarchy. The return of Eder Militao from injury has further impacted his position in the starting lineup.

As the club prepares for a generational shift in its defense, Real Madrid is evaluating several candidates. Previous targets included Alessandro Bastoni, Nico Schlotterbeck, and Luka Vuskovic. Recent reports indicate the club is also considering Jacobo Ramon from Como as they manage upcoming squad transitions.

Regarding Rüdiger’s future, speculation suggests he may begin planning his next steps in the spring. Potential destinations if a continued stay in Madrid becomes unlikely include the Premier League, the Saudi Pro League, or Italy. Tottenham Hotspur has reportedly expressed interest in the defender, which would mark a return to a club where he previously competed at a high level.
