Apple Intelligence storage management controversy

Overview

Following the release of macOS 27, users have sought ways to manage the significant storage space occupied by Apple Intelligence models. While Apple provides toggles for AI features, these do not delete the underlying files, which users report can consume between 12 GB and over 30 GB of storage.

To address this, developer Om Lahore released ‘RemoveMacAI’, an open-source command-line tool. The tool allows users to disable services and delete locally stored models by redirecting requests to a closed local port, reclaiming substantial disk space. However, using the tool disables features such as Siri, Writing Tools, and ChatGPT integration, and experts have warned of potential risks to basic macOS functions.

As the situation evolves, pressure is mounting on Apple to provide an official method for deactivation. Some organizations have reportedly refused to purchase new Mac hardware until a way to completely remove these generative AI features is provided, citing internal policies against AI installation.
