Apple has officially announced major updates to its desktop lineup, focusing on hardware optimized for on-device artificial intelligence and agentic computing workloads. The new Mac mini features the M6 chip, marking Apple’s first processor built on a 2nm manufacturing process. This architecture provides significant improvements in single-threaded and multithreaded performance, supported by a specialized Neural Engine for AI workloads. The M6 chip offers up to 40% faster CPU performance and a fourfold increase in AI computing capabilities compared to previous generations. The M6 model specifically includes a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU with integrated Neural Accelerators. Accelerators, alongside a dual 16-core Neural Engine. An M5 Pro option is also available, supporting up to 18-core CPU and 64GB of unified memory, alongside Thunderbolt 5 connectivity. Due to rising component costs, the entry price for the Mac mini has increased to $899, with pricing in Japan starting at 149,800 yen. Recent details indicate the M6 variant also provides 2x faster graphics and includes connectivity upgrades such as Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and 2.5Gb Ethernet. The Mac Studio has been refreshed with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips. The M5 Ultra utilizes a quad-die architecture via UltraFusion technology to support up to 512GB of unified memory and 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth, targeting professionals in VFX, scientific research, and AI development. The M5 Ultra provides up to 4.3 times faster AI performance and 1.8x faster graphics than previous models. The M5 Max configuration offers up to 128GB of unified memory and 614GB/s of bandwidth. The Mac Studio M5 Max starts at $2,499, while the M5 Ultra starts at $5,499. Both product lines feature Thunderbolt 5, allowing for high-speed external storage and the ability to cluster multiple Mac Studio systems for distributed AI inference. Additionally, the Mac Studio introduces PCIe Gen 6 SSD architecture, which may double storage performance.
