The Arab League has expressed increasing concern over regional instability involving Israel, Iran, and Lebanon. Initially, the League warned that Israeli military strikes in southern Lebanon constituted a ‘dangerous escalation’ that threatened Lebanese sovereignty and undermined peace efforts. The organization called for international intervention to prevent a wider conflict and urged compliance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. Following these developments, the Arab League expanded its condemnations to include Iranian attacks against Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, which were described as violations of national sovereignty. Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy asserted that the security of these nations is an integral part of Arab national security. In response to these accusations following the 166th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers, the Iranian Foreign Ministry rejected the Arab League’s claims. Tehran clarified that its military actions were ‘purely defensive’ and intended to safeguard national security, specifically targeting United States interests and installations. Iran emphasized a ‘principled policy of good-neighbourliness’ and argued that security in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman should be managed by littoral states without foreign interference. Additionally, Iran reaffirmed its sovereignty over the Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb islands. Addressing economic tensions, the League has intensified its calls for the international community to counter Israeli measures against the Palestinian economy. Specifically, the League highlighted the seizure of clearance funds, which have exceeded six billion dollars, as an attempt to stifle the Palestinian economy and sever its external connections. At its 166th ordinary session in Tunisia, the Council of Foreign Ministers called for immediate international intervention to protect Palestinians from Israeli aggression and settler terrorism. The Council urged the United Nations and signatories of the Fourth Geneva Convention to act in accordance with international law. Key resolutions included support for an Arab-Islamic plan for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and the potential for an international conference in Cairo. The Council also expressed support for mediation efforts by Egypt and Qatar, emphasizing that the Palestinian Authority must assume full governance in Gaza within the framework of the 1967 territories.
