Archaeological discovery of ancient Mieza educational site

Overview

Archaeologists conducting a three-year excavation in ancient Mieza, near Naoussa, Greece, have uncovered a massive 4th-century B.C. educational complex. Led by archaeologist Angeliki Kottaridi, the project has identified a site believed to be the royal gymnasium where the philosopher Aristotle taught Alexander the Great.

The findings include a ‘didaskaleion’ (teaching area) with stone benches or desks, a stadium, a wrestling gymnasium, and a 200-meter covered walkway known as a xystos. Researchers also identified two large, luxurious banquet halls featuring mosaic floors and raised dining platforms. The architectural style of these structures, including columns and friezes, shows significant similarities to the royal palace at Aigai.

Recovered artifacts, such as ceramics, coins, and bronze writing styluses, suggest the site was used for both physical training and intellectual pursuits. These discoveries provide physical evidence for historical accounts, such as those by Plutarch, regarding the elite education provided to Alexander and other Macedonian nobles by King Philip II. Historical records indicate Alexander studied under Aristotle between the ages of 13 and 16, receiving instruction in ethics, politics, literature, and natural sciences to prepare for leadership and warfare.
