During the opening rounds, Indian athlete PV Sindhu advanced to the second round following a victory over Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang. Other Indian players saw mixed results; while Tanvi Sharma and qualifiers Tharun Mannepalli and Rounak Chouhan moved forward, several other members of the Indian contingent, including Unnati Hooda and Ashmita Chaliha, were eliminated.
As the tournament progressed, sixth-seeded PV Sindhu secured a straight-games victory over Japan’s Riko Gunji (21-15, 21-15) to reach the quarter-finals. In the women’s singles, 17-year-old Tanvi Sharma reached the round of 16 after defeating Chiu Pin-Chian but was subsequently eliminated by Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand.
In the quarter-finals, Sindhu faced Intanon in a three-game contest. After losing the first game 11-21, Sindhu regained momentum to win the second 21-19, forcing a decider. However, Intanon secured the victory in the third game with a score of 21-18, eliminating Sindhu and extending Intanon’s head-to-head lead over Sindhu to 10-4.
