In mid-August 2026, the Youth Climate Action Fund expanded its reach through several new municipal initiatives. In Argentina, the Municipality of Vicente López launched a call for proposals for youth and youth organizations to fund environmental care and climate action projects, targeting individuals aged 15 to 24 as part of the global 300-city network. In Sierra Leone, Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr launched the third cohort of the Bloomberg Youth Climate Action Fund 2.0 on International Youth Day. This partnership between the Freetown City Council, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) provides microgrants of US$1,000–$5,000 for projects like recycling and tree planting. The program in Sierra Leone extends to Kenema, Karene, Bombali, Pujehun, Bonthe, Kambia, and Kailahun. In Uruguay, the Government of Salto opened its 2026 call for the Youth and Climate Action Fund, offering US$1,000–$5,000 for projects in areas such as green infrastructure, reforestation, and sustainable agriculture. Applicants must have endorsement from an educational institution. By late August, Quito, Ecuador, and Ushuaia, Argentina, also announced funding opportunities. Quito is allocating US$100,000—combining US$50,000 from the international fund with US$50,000 from the Quito Environmental Fund—to support climate mitigation and adaptation projects. Ushuaia, participating in the initiative’s second cohort, is inviting proposals from youth aged 15 to 24 to address local challenges in alignment with its 2030 Local Climate Action Plan. Additionally, the Budapest Municipality launched a round of the Youth Climate Protection Fund, supported by the international Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund. Further expansion in Latin America includes Quilmes, Argentina, which has opened registration for socio-environmental projects requiring the backing of a non-profit organization, and Río Grande, which is facilitating micro-grants for local youth to address challenges such as urban gardens and circular economy practices.
