Argentina sentencing in Angel Di Maria intimidation case

Overview

An Argentine court in Rosario has sentenced Sergio Gabriel “Bebe” Di Vanni to seven and a half years in prison for orchestrating an intimidation campaign against footballer Angel Di Maria and his family. The sentencing follows investigations into incidents from 2024, during which Di Vanni, a member of a dissident faction of the Newell’s Old Boys supporters group, allegedly paid approximately four million pesos to have gunmen fire shots near Di Maria’s residence.

The campaign included leaving a box containing a pig’s head with a bullet embedded in it at a real estate agency run by Di Maria’s sister, alongside death threats against his daughter. These actions were reportedly motivated by internal power struggles within the supporters' group to prevent Di Maria from returning to play for his boyhood club, Rosario Central. While Di Maria eventually returned to the club in 2025, the court has now handed down sentences to those involved, including co-defendant Belen Gutierrez, who received three and a half years.
