Argentine agricultural sector challenges and modernization

Overview

The Argentine agricultural sector continues to face severe financial and operational instability, particularly within the meat and poultry industries.

In the meat processing sector, the plant ArreBeef has dismissed over 400 contract workers in Pérez Millán following a 50 percent decline in slaughter activity. The company linked this reduction to difficulties in placing production in key external markets.

Further compounding the crisis in the poultry segment, Granja Tres Arroyos has suspended operations at its industrial plant in Capitán Sarmiento, Buenos Aires, until further notice. The company cited force majeure and a lack of electricity supply as the reasons for the stoppage. Workers and union representatives have expressed concern regarding a permanent closure, noting that leased machinery has been removed and company directors have reportedly vacated their offices. This follows previous layoffs, including 250 workers at the La China plant in Concepción del Uruguay, and prior closures in Tristán Suárez and Becar. Additionally, the Avex plant in Río Cuarto, Córdoba, has experienced a prolonged production halt.

The company is currently navigating a severe financial crisis with a reported debt of approximately $350.9 million. Following the failure of private restructuring negotiations, Granja Tres Arroyos has filed for bankruptcy protection (concurso preventivo) to reorganize its debts. This operational and financial decline has resulted in the dismissal of more than 1,700 employees across the country.

These disruptions add to existing pressures involving labor unrest, export restrictions, and the ongoing push for technological modernization to address production losses and international competitiveness.
