Argentine agricultural water and production impacts

Overview

Recent rainfall in Argentina has had varying impacts on the agricultural sector. Initially, precipitation across the agricultural belt, particularly in the Litoral region, improved soil water reserves. While moisture levels in Buenos Aires remained favorable for wheat, rainfall distribution was uneven, with significant accumulations in northern Buenos Aires and Santa Fe, while other areas saw more modest figures.

However, technical reports have since warned of potential risks due to regional excess water. In the southeastern districts of Necochea, Lobería, and San Cayetano, simulations suggest a potential loss of between 873,000 and 903,000 tons of grain production. This scenario could result in agricultural margin losses between US$ 137 million and US$ 153 million, driven by difficulties accessing productive surfaces and reduced yields for corn, soy, and sunflower crops. To mitigate these risks, proposals have been made to expand the Canal Los Ángeles 1 and coordinate rural road maintenance.
