In Bragado, councilman Germán Díaz of the La Libertad Avanza party was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking following a police raid on a residence in O’Brien.

During the search of the property, authorities seized cocaine, cutting tools, and a precision scale. The operation was conducted by the Buenos Aires Provincial Police under judicial direction from the Mercedes Judicial Department, specifically UFI Nº 7 and the Guarantee Court Nº 3. The arrest follows community concerns regarding increased drug sales in the area, which were reportedly raised by local residents during a meeting with Mayor Sergio Barenghi.

Díaz, 52, assumed his position in December 2023 and serves as the second vice president of the local legislative body. During his preliminary hearing, Díaz denied all charges, claiming the investigation is a result of “political persecution.”

The La Libertad Avanza block in Bragado has issued a statement expressing “energetic repudiation” of drug trafficking and distancing itself from Díaz, stating that the matter “must be resolved exclusively by the judiciary.” In response, the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR) has called for the Bragado City Council to take immediate institutional action, including preventive suspension and potential removal from office to prevent the council from covering for him.
