Argentine physical activity and exercise trends

Data from the 2023 National Survey on Physical Activity and Sport in Argentina reveals a shift in exercise motivations, with many citizens prioritizing mental wellbeing and enjoyment over aesthetic or performance goals. Approximately 38.8% of those who train cite pleasure and fun as their primary motivation, a trend particularly strong among those aged 16 to 29. Additionally, 83.6% of individuals intending to start a regular routine aim to do so to “relax or clear their minds.”

While motivations are shifting toward mental health, practical barriers remain significant. The survey indicates that 55% of individuals over age 16 engaged in regular physical activity over the past year. For those who stopped exercising, 79.4% cited a lack of time as the primary reason, followed by financial constraints (51.7%) and fatigue or loss of motivation (46.5%). Despite these obstacles, 76% of those who ceased activity expressed an intention to return to regular exercise.

Regarding facility selection, a 2025 sectoral survey found that location is the most critical factor for gym and club users (45.5%), followed by equipment quality and quantity (30.6%) and operating hours (23.9%).
