Argentine wine sector production and labor crisis
Overview
The Argentine wine sector is experiencing a significant production crisis. Officials from SOEVA report that over 1,000 hectares of vineyards have been abandoned, with an additional 650 hectares at risk due to high production costs, marketing difficulties, and rising electricity costs for irrigation. This instability has already impacted more than 120 workers and threatens future harvest yields due to neglected maintenance.
In response to the economic climate, SOEVA has reached a wage recomposition agreement for wine workers. The agreement establishes bimonthly salary increments through February, providing a 3.6% increase for wineries and 3.4% for vineyards. Union leader Miguel Rubio noted that while the union initially sought 2.5% monthly increases, they accepted these caps to avoid the risk of strikes making workers ‘worse off’ given their economic vulnerability. SOEVA has requested a formal declaration of productive or viticultural emergency from government authorities in La Rioja and the Chilecito Deliberative Council.
