Argentine woman arrested for cocaine smuggling in Japan

Overview

Argentine national Rosa Micaela Quipildor, 30, was arrested at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport after attempting to smuggle approximately one kilogram of cocaine into Japan. Following suspicious behavior at immigration, medical X-rays revealed 101 cocoon-shaped capsules, double-wrapped in plastic and black rubber-like material, inside her digestive tract. The street value of the drugs is estimated at over US$150,000.

During interrogation, Quipildor admitted to acting as a drug mule. She stated she was recruited by a woman met at a festival in Argentina and was instructed to receive the shipment in Brazil before traveling through London to Tokyo. She claimed she was promised a payment of approximately US$7,000 for the delivery.

Records indicate this is not Quipildor’s first involvement in such activities. In 2022, she was convicted in Argentina for attempting to send 1.36 kilograms of cocaine to Thailand and Malaysia via postal services, receiving a suspended three-year prison sentence.
