Armed incursions in Colombian banana plantations

Overview

The Association of Banana Growers of Magdalena and La Guajira (Asbama) reported recurring armed incursions into banana plantations within the Zona Bananera region. On August 28, armed groups entered farms in Portón de Morán, Río Frío, and Orihueca to intimidate workers and disrupt cutting and packing processes.

According to Asbama president José Francisco Zúñiga Cotes, these groups are using violence and extortion to impose demands. Security footage and testimonies have documented the presence of armed men within packing facilities. The association has requested urgent intervention from the Colombian Ministry of Defense to protect workers and secure the production chain.
