Armed raid on Cuajimalpa animal shelter

Overview

In July 2026, an armed group raided the Refugio Franciscano animal shelter in Cuajimalpa, Mexico. The intruders entered the facility via an underground tunnel on land belonging to the Fundación Haghenbeck. Using tools such as hammers, saws, and electric cutters, the group damaged at least 16 cages and various structures.

The raid endangered 16 rescued dogs and disrupted the relocation process for approximately 300 animals. During the incident, a staff member was briefly seized and a mobile device was stolen. While the shelter has accused the Fundación Haghenbeck of orchestrating the attack, the foundation maintains the land was provided only as a verbal loan. Local authorities and the Mexico City prosecutor’s office have launched an investigation into the matter.
