Armenia hosting UN COP17 biodiversity summit

Overview

Armenia is preparing to host the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity in Yerevan, scheduled for October 19 to 30. The summit is intended to address nature conservation and the halting of biodiversity loss, preceded by a Biodiversity Leaders Summit on October 16.

Silva Adamyan, president of the environmental NGO Bird Lovers Center, noted that such conferences are frequently held in nations facing major environmental challenges. She expressed concern that government bodies might not fully represent global environmental issues, suggesting that civil society must play a significant role in representing biodiversity concerns.

In anticipation of the event, Armenia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has begun coordinating security and traffic management. Minister Arpine Sargsyan has held consultations with the police, the Rescue Service, and the Ministry of Environment to plan for public order, emergency prevention, and security at venues and along main routes. Officials have been instructed to inform the public regarding expected road closures and traffic restrictions to minimize disruption.
