Armenia 35th anniversary of independence celebrations

Armenia is celebrating the 35th anniversary of its independence, marking the restoration of statehood following the 1991 referendum. The government has allocated approximately 1.3 billion drams (3 million euros) to organize a program featuring large-scale concerts, symphonic performances, and historical reenactments in regions including Idjevan, Vanadzor, Kapan, and Gyumri, alongside a major gala event at Yerevan’s Republic Square.

During official ceremonies, President Vahagn Khachaturyan presented state awards and emphasized that statehood requires a “realistic assessment of capabilities,” warning against losing a sense of reality. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addressed the nation from Republic Square, noting that while the country celebrates in an environment of peace, this peace was achieved through “significant sacrifice.”

National and religious leaders, including National Assembly President Ruben Rubinyan and Catholicos Karekin II, have issued messages calling for national unity to face internal and external challenges. The celebrations also include the symbolic lighting of public buildings in the colors of the Armenian flag, with displays noted in various locations, including parts of Greece. Internationally, the anniversary has drawn congratulatory messages from leaders in China, Russia, and Kazakhstan.
