Armenia-Turkey economic normalization efforts

Overview

Following the Armenia-Turkey Business Forum held in Yerevan on September 3-4, 2026, the Van Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Van TSO) and the Union of Manufacturers and Businessmen of Armenia (UMBA) issued a joint statement advocating for the normalization of relations. Ongoing projects include the development of parking facilities for trucks and the widening of a 7-kilometer road.

On September 13, Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan announced that Armenia is prepared to open its borders with Turkey “at any moment,” stating that the necessary infrastructure for the movement of people, goods, and vehicles is complete. Khachaturyan noted that the Kars-Akhalkalaki route is already being utilized for railway trade and emphasized that opening the border would grant landlocked Armenia access to Turkish Mediterranean ports.

On September 23 and 27, during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met to discuss the normalization process. Discussions focused on implementing previous agreements, strengthening bilateral trade, and fostering connections between business communities. Specific topics included the potential joint restoration of the historic Ani Bridge and the unblocking of regional communication routes via the TRIPP project. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan noted that Turkey and the United States both support the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, positioning Turkey as a key coordinator in the South Caucasus.
