Armenian local election controversy
Overview
Following the October 25 local self-government elections in Armenia, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed unease regarding reports of his Civil Contract party receiving extremely high margins of support, such as 70 to 90 percent. Analysts suggested these figures might imply a lack of meaningful opposition.
Pashinyan later characterized the election results as a milestone in the “destruction” of his political opponents, describing rivals as “foreign spy forces.” Conversely, opposition groups, including the Hayastan alliance and Strong Armenia, contested the legitimacy of the process. They alleged the government utilized intimidation and obstruction, citing the pre-election arrest of over two dozen activists on vote-buying charges that supporters claim were politically motivated. These actions reportedly caused numerous candidates to withdraw from the races.
