Arrest of journalist Ali Tarakçı in Turkey

Overview

Journalist Ali Tarakçı was arrested in Ankara following an investigation into a social media post on the X platform. The investigation, led by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, focused on claims that a ‘very important minister’ would resign. Authorities charged Tarakçı with ‘publicly spreading misleading information’ under Article 217/A of the Turkish Penal Code.

Following his detention, the Ankara 8th Criminal Court of Peace ordered his arrest, and the Ankara 7th Criminal Court of Peace blocked access to his X account. During the investigation, authorities searched Tarakçı’s residence and seized digital materials. Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek publicly denied the rumors regarding his resignation. In his testimony, Tarakçı stated that his post was not intended to target any specific minister directly.
