Arrest of Marco Antônio Heredia Viveros in Brazil

Overview

Marco Antônio Heredia Viveros, the ex-husband of activist Maria da Penha, was preventively arrested in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, for violating judicial protective measures. The arrest was requested by the Public Ministry of Ceará after Viveros gave an interview to Record TV for the program ‘Domingo Espetacular’.

Since 2024, Viveros had been prohibited from disclosing information regarding legal proceedings or sharing the names and images of the victims, which include Maria da Penha and two of their daughters. Judge Cesar Alcantara determined there were sufficient indications of the crime of violating urgent protective measures under the Maria da Penha Law.

The judiciary ordered the immediate removal of all promotional content and the interview from digital platforms, establishing a daily fine of R$ 100,000 for non-compliance. The case is linked to the 1983 attack by Viveros against Maria da Penha, an event that served as the catalyst for the creation of the Maria da Penha Law.
