Arrest of NTK leader in Tamil Nadu
Overview
Police in Coimbatore arrested M. Karthika, the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) women’s wing leader and a Dharapuram by-election candidate, along with her husband and four others. The arrests follow allegations of misconduct during the Dharapuram assembly by-election campaign, including an alleged confrontation with police during a vehicle procession and the storming of a police station after campaign banners were removed.
NTK leader Seeman condemned the arrests, describing them as the “height of fascism” and accusing the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government of using police for political revenge. Opposition leaders from the DMK, AIADMK, PMK, CPI, and DMDK also criticized the move. DMK President M.K. Stalin characterized the government’s actions as a “dictatorial regime” and warned against using police for political vendettas. Additionally, DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth criticized the arrest conditions, noting that Karthika was not allowed to change out of her nightdress before being taken into custody.
