Arrests of retired military officers in Bangladesh

Overview

In October 2026, retired Major Akhtaruzzaman was arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch following an incident at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. He allegedly behaved aggressively toward the airport Executive Director, used abusive language, and assaulted a security supervisor. The case involves allegations of obstructing government officials and making offensive remarks regarding the Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism.

In November 2026, retired Army Major Khandakar Abdul Hafiz was arrested in Dhaka’s Banani area by the Detective Branch. He is accused of involvement in anti-government activities, state-subversive conspiracies, and running anti-government propaganda on social media. Authorities allege Hafiz used a platform called ‘Unity Care and Public Parliament’ to engage in conspiracies and attempt the rehabilitation of the Awami League by maintaining contact with former Army Chief General (retd) Aziz Ahmed and other fugitives.

Additional allegations against Hafiz include fund collection, the promotion of violent digital content, inciting disorder via Facebook, spreading propaganda favoring the killing of police officers, and communicating with domestic and foreign spies. A Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate granted a four-day remand for Hafiz following his production in court. Security officials have also linked Hafiz to the 2009 BDR mutiny conspiracy, alleging he participated in activities against state security and colluded with those responsible for the massacre that killed 74 people.
